Mayo athletes shine in Dublin Marathon

image preview

The 43rd Annual Hollymount Road Races take place on Sunday November 9. The 3km plus course is a familiar testing one, with a stiff uphill finish along the main street in the village. Three laps make up the men's 10km, while the women just do one in their 3km, race. Many famous names in Irish athletics have done battle here over the years and once again a top class field is expected from clubs around the province and further afield as well as the traditional coachload from Liverpool. Of course individuals are heartily welcome too. The race format has not changed much over the years, and is typical of many races around the country that originated in the 60s and 70s. The programme is: 1pm: U17 boys/girls 3km; 1.30pm: women's 3km, various master's categories. Entries (€10) /changing/post race presentation in Community Centre. Mayo finalist in Baileys Young Chef competition

image preview

A young chef from Mayo has reached the final stages of the 2009 Baileys Euro-Toques Young Chef Competition. Twenty-three-year-old Patrick Powell is one of five finalists in total. He is from Killala and works at Knockranny House Hotel. To get to this stage Patrick had to submit his CV and recipe that took into account current economic climate and environmental trends for a seasonal main course dish for four people, incorporating local and artisan produce at a value-for-money cost. Entrants were then invited to attend a panel interview in Dublin conducted by chefs and founding Euro-toques members John Howard and Gerry Galvin, past winner Neven Maguire and Euro-toques secretary general Ruth Hegarty.

Five Mayo teams in national 10k road race

The Woodie's DIY AAI National 10k Road Race Championship of Ireland takes place on Sunday April 26, in Navan, Co Meath. Club athletes from every county will be there hoping to win individual and team medals in what is usually a very competitive race. Mayo AC will be among them and is sending a strong squad, some with plenty of experience and some new to championship racing.

Galway cookbook tantalises the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover

Mayo AC athletes compete nationally

At the Dublin Athletic Board Graded meeting last week two Mayo AC vets took part in the 1500 metres race. Seamus (Jim) Gaughan has been training back in Mayo recently and it showed as he recorded an excellent 4.57.33 in the over 55 category. His Dublin based colleague and clubmate Mick Ferry (over 60) also had a good run to finish 5.40.13.

The many talents of Michael O’Meara from Oscar’s Bistro

The launch of a great new recipe book, The Galway Ingredient, prompted me to arrange a date for a chat with Michael O’Meara of Oscar’s Bistro. The Galway Ingredient is a superb book of recipes from the Euro-toques chefs of Galway, and was launched recently to coincide with the Volvo Ocean Race visit to Galway. It costs €5 and is available in Eason’s, Dubray’s, and most local book shops. For his part O’Meara is both a contributor of recipes and the photographer of every picture in the book.

Big turn out for Claremorris road race

image preview

It had been quite a while since Mayo AC did not have a finisher in the top three of a Road Race League. This happened last Saturday in the fifth race in Mayo AC's 2009 Road Race League, sponsored by C & C Cellular, which took place in sunny conditions over a recognised testing course at Claremorris. The eighth DeCare International sponsored road race and walk started and finished in Main Street.

Mayo athletes do well at Dublin City Marathon

Mayo AC had 17 finishers in the Dublin City Marathon, three first time marathoners, many improved times, and all enjoyed the tremendous atmosphere and fantastic Mayo support among the thousands lining the 26.2 mile route. TJ McHugh was the first Mayo AC finisher in a brilliant 2.38, and Tom Waldron brought the team home in an amazing 4.59 in his o70s category. The race incorporated the Irish Marathon Championships and results are being checked by AAI. A quick check of the overall results indicates that three Mayo AC athletes are in with chance of individual medals. The masters men's o35 and o50 teams will also be in the running.
